Carnival celebrations (Mardi - gras) are held throughout Spain taking place mainly on or around Carnival (Shrove) Tuesday (pancake day).  The most famous carnival celebrations are held in the capital towns of the Canary Island, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. In this two cities the celebrations last for about two weeks, although the main events take place during the week in which Shrove Tuesday (Carnival Tuesday) falls.
