VELAZQUEZ 400TH ANNIVERSARY

The Prado Museum. On  16^th December 99 the exhibition "Velazquez, Rubens and Van Dyck, Court Painters in European Royal Households" opened to the public and will continue until March the 5^th 2000.

2000.- CHARLES V 500TH ANNIVERSARY

The year 2000 is the 500th anniversary of Charles V, heir to the throne of Spain on the death of the Catholic Monarchs and the Holy Germanic Roman Empire. This will see a programme of events in line with the vital role Charles V played in Renaissance Europe. The commemorations will take place during 1999 and 2000 and will include exhibitions, scientific meetings, musical, publishing events, etc.

1999 Exhibitions: "Images of Philip II and Charles V in historic painting" (Prado Museum Oct-Dec) . "The American Indies and art during the Catholic Monarchy (The encounter of cultures under Charles V and Philip II)". "A European Court in Brussels, Alberto & Isabel Clara Eugenia 1598-1621".

2000 Exhibitions: "Carolus". This exhibition will be staged in four different countries around a common programme but with contributions from each participating country. The venues for the exhibition are: Gante (St. Peter Abbey Nov 6 1999-30 Jan 2000) Bonn (Kunst und Austellungshalle der Bundersrepublik Deutschald Feb 24-May 21 2000), Viena (Kunsthistoricshes Museum) June 9-Sept 10 2000) and Madrid (Prado Museum Oct 1 2000-Jan 7 2001).

GRAN REGATA 2000 -TALL SHIPS 2000

C�diz, in the southwest corner of Spain, will be host to the ISTA Regatta between May 4th and 7th 2000. The city will explode in street pageantry and celebrations to welcome the sailors of what is expected to be the largest ever international race of square-rigged and other training vessels. Santiago de Compostela enjoys a double celebration. In 1999 bidding farewell to the present Millennium with the Holy Year celebrations and welcoming Year 2000 with a comprehensive programme of events developed to commemorate its nomination as European City of Culture.

Santiago de Compostela, together with eight other European cities will be European City of Culture in the year 2000. A programme of events has been developed, some specific to Santiago, some in conjunction with the other European Cultural Cities, to include cultural manifestations of all kinds, music, theatre, cinema, arts, television.
