A full British passport, valid for the duration of the visit, is required to enter mainland Spain, the Balearic and Canary Islands.
EU, Norway and Iceland citizens do not require visas for visits whatever the length and purpose of the visit. For stays over 90 days residence permits are required: temporary permits for stays of up to a year and permanent permits after that. Holders of passports valid for the entire period of the visit, issued by Canada, Japan and the USA do not require visas for visits of under 90 days, but a special visa is required for longer stays.

Documents Required: An EU Driving Licence is accepted for driving in Spain. If your current one does not comply with the EU format, you are advised to obtain an International Driving Licence, available from the AA. EU citizens are advised to obtain the EU format licence from the Driver�s Vehicle Agency. A valid driving licence is required at all times when driving in Spain. The vehicle log book/registration and adequate insurance are also required.
Insurance: Third party insurance is compulsory in Spain. Travellers are advised to check with their insurers the terms of cover under their policy when driving in Spain.
Traffic Offences: On the spot payment of fines (reduced by 30%) is compulsory for non-residents.
Most accommodation is provided in Hotels, classified from 1 to 5 stars, as well as Hostels or Pensions, classified from 1 to 3 stars. BOOKING: It is always advisable to book accommodation well in advance, particularly during festivals or in popular resorts on the coast from late Spring to October. Reservations may be made by writing direct to the hotels, list of which may be obtained from this office, or through travel agents or certain hotel booking services. Letters to 3, 4 or 5 star hotels may be written in English, but it is advisable to write in Spanish to lower categories. REDUCTIONS FOR CHILDREN: Most hotels make reductions for babies and small children, though there are no official regulations. This matter should be arranged with the hotel management.
COMPLAINTS: All hotels, restaurants, camp sites and petrol stations are required by law to keep and produce complaint forms when required by a client to do so. Should you be unable to obtain these, you are advised to obtain them from the Tourist Information Office when possible, or write to the Direcci�n General de Turismo (addresses available from this office) of the appropriate Autonomous Government, enclosing all factual evidence, within a month of the incident.
Babies: Baby foods and disposable nappies are available at all resorts and are obtainable from supermarkets and chemists. Babysitting arrangements can usually be made locally. The availability and costs should be checked with establishments directly or through the booking agent.
Banking Hours: Most banks open from 09.00-14.00 Monday to Friday and 09.00 to 13.00 on Saturdays (except in the summer). Times may vary.
Church Services: Information on the location of churches and timetables of religious services should be sought locally.
Consular Assistance: British Consulates in Spain will assist holidaymakers in emergencies. They can provide lists of local lawyers, interpreters and local doctors. They can also give guidance in tracing missing persons. Addresses available from this office on request.
Credit Cards: Most hotels and department stores accept major credit cards, but this should be checked before each transaction.
Currency: From 1st January 2002, the Euro (� ) stars circulation in Spain. From 28th February the Peseta will ceasee to be accepcepted in commercial transactions, although high street banks will accept tem for exchange into Euros until 30th June. Betwenn 1st Jan and 28th Feb payments in Pesetas will be accepted but any change due will be given in Euros. There are seven denominations in notes �of 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200 & 500 �- and eigh differen coins �1 and 2 � and 1, 2, 5, 10,20 and 50 cents. 1 � equals 166.386 Pesetas. Exchange rate: check with your bank or travel agent. Spanish currency regulations: The import or export of cash, notes and bearer-cheques, in any currency, includingEuros, is subject to declaration where the amount exceeds 6,010 � per person and journey.

Health service: British tourists visiting Spain, covered by the British National Insurance scheme, will enjoy free medical assistance under the Spanish Health Service during their stay. Medical Conditions: Those requiring special treatment or diets are advised to carry a letter from their doctor translated into Spanish, indicating the nature of the condition, treatment and medicines required. Summer Time: From the morning of the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.
Taxis: Taxi fares vary in different areas. There is a basic initial charge, additional surcharges will be added to the meter fare at night, weekends and public holidays. Taxi drivers should have a list of approved fares for inter-city runs, railway stations and airports, and will be able to supply information prior to boarding the vehicle.
Tax refunds: EU citizens are not entitled to tax refunds on purchases made in Spain. Further enquiries should be made to the Spanish Commercial Office.

Tipping: 5-10% of the bill is customary, although related to clients� satisfaction with services received.
Vaccinations: According to the Spanish and World Health Organisations, no vaccinations are needed by EU residents to enter Spain.
Weddings: Non residents planning to marry while on holiday should note that procedures are complicated and lengthy. They are advised to contact their national consulate in the area where they plan to marry.
